Nutrition-packed "toddler milk" for picky eaters!

Dr. Sarah came up with this "toddler milk" recipe for her own son after doing research on home-made alternatives for baby formula.  Because he's three, it includes a bunch of healthy fats, protein, and probiotics suitable for toddlers and older children to help get them an extra dose of nutrients!

Toddler Coconut Milk

Makes 1 5oz serving

You will need:

•         1 teaspoon (4g) colostrum*

•         1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) Grass-fed goat milk Ghee or MCT oil

•         1/4 teaspoon (1.2 mL) Organic Hi-Oleic sunflower oil (La TourAngelle®)

•         1/8 teaspoon (.6 mL) Expeller-pressed grapeseed oil (La TourAngelle®)

•         1/8 teaspoon (.6 mL) Unsulphered blackstrap molasses (Wholesome™)

•         Nordic Naturals DHA Supplement for Infants* (dosage based on weight)

•         1 scoop Nutrient powder such as Standard Process Cyrofood* or NutraGen Pure Plant Protein*

•         1 scoop or Klaire Labs Infant Probiotic* powder

·         Unflavored, unsweetened coconut milk

Mix oils and molasses in a measuring cup or shaker bottle with ounce markings.  Use your child’s weight to determine how much DHA supplement is needed, then add the DHA, nutrient powder, and probiotic powder to the oil and molasses mixture.  Mix everything together for a smooth consistency, then top off with enough coconut milk for a 5oz. serving.  Give it another good mix to combine, then serve!

6 Steps For Calming Your Easily Over-Stimulated Child This Fourth of July

6 Steps For Calming Your Easily Over-Stimulated Child This Fourth of July

If your child is easily over-stimulated, the Fourth of July is always a challenge.  Loud booms keep them up at night, and the threat response triggered by the constant noise and explosions keeps them on high alert.  These kids have a difficulty calming down under normal circumstances for various reasons, but the overstimulation that hits around this time of year can be brutal.

So, in order to calm down that fight-or-flight stress response that gets triggered by loud noises like fireworks, we need to help the child better adapt to their environment.  I’ve put together a list of 6 things you can do to calm down their body’s stress response for a happier, less-stressful holiday.

Superhero Muffins for Supermoms!

We're celebrating Supermoms at Watson Chiropractic! All this month we're celebrating the silent superheroes out there: MOMS.  And what better way to fuel your supermom powers than with these tasty and secretly-good-for-you SUPERHERO MUFFINS?

Photo by our recipe tester, Megan Scott, from Joy of Cooking

A mash-up of carrot cake, zucchini bread, and oatmeal cookies, these muffins might just end up being your kryptonite - there's no way you can resist eating the entire batch at once.  And while we grown-ups having been scarfing down the muffins as written below, we've also listed some suggestions for add-ins and substitutions to satisfy even the pickiest of little sidekicks. Have a smaller league of superheroes at home? No problem - these freeze and reheat well!

(P.S. - These muffins are gluten- and dairy-free!)

Superhero Muffins

Adapted from Run Fast, Eat Slow

  • 2 cups almond meal
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (use gluten-free if sensitive)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup currants or raisins
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3 eggs, beaten (or vegan egg equivalent)
  • 1 cup grated zucchini (about 1 zucchini)
  • 1 cup grated carrot (about 2 carrots)
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoon canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup agave syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients: almond meal, oats, walnuts, currants or raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, mix together the wet ingredients: eggs, zucchini, carrot, pumpkin, agave syrup, and vanilla.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Because these muffins are so moist, we found that they tended to stick to paper cups.  For best results, spray a muffin tin with non-stick spray and spoon the batter directly into the muffin cups, filling each to the brim*. Bake until the muffins are nicely browned on top and a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean, about 25 to 35 minutes.

*Note: This recipe yields a dense yet moist muffin.  They won't rise as much as traditional muffin mixes will!

Suggested add-ins/substitutions:

  • Sub mini chocolate chips instead of currents! Enjoy Life brand makes dairy-free chocolate chips that are also free of most major allergens.
  • Mix in some shredded coconut
  • Instead of walnuts and raisins, use pecans and dried apple pieces
  • Add 1 Tablespoon chia seeds and 1 Tablespoon of ground flax to the wet mixture for extra protein, fiber, and omegas.

TMI Tuesday: Stop Seasonal Allergies Before They Start

Do the sniffles have you down? Are you buying stock in kleenex?  Dr. Sarah has the solution to stop seasonal allergies before they start!

Seasonal stresses, most commonly known as seasonal allergies, are really just an over-reaction of our immune system to environmental stressors like dust, mold, or pollen.  When we have a healthy immune system our body is able to effectively respond to these outside invaders.  However, when our immune system is weakened or already over-stimulated our body will over- or under-react to environmental stressors, causing the runny nose, itchy eyes, and over-abundance of mucus we recognize as seasonal allergies.

The best way to avoid seasonal allergies is to make sure you have a healthy, well-functioning immune system from the very start, through diet, supplementation, and chiropractic care.  Dr. Sarah explains how all of this works together in the video below!

Do you have questions about seasonal allergies, or how to avoid them?  Dr. Sarah is hosting a LIVE Q&A on our Facebook page Tuesday, February 21st at 4pm.  Email us your questions and then join us on the 21st as we answer them LIVE.

TMI Tuesday: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Chiropractic!

It's the last week of National Chiropractic Month, and to celebrate, this TMI Tuesday we bring you "10 Things You Didn't Know About Chiropractic"!  We get asked a lot of questions about chiropractic in our practice, because here at Watson Chiropractic we treat the whole person, not just their pain.  Our intake forms for your first visit may be a bit different than what some people are used to, so we hear it all!  "Why do you need my medical history?" "Why are you asking so many questions?" "Why can't you just crack my back and get it over with?".  The reason for most of these questions is because some people just don't know or understand what Chiropractic is all about.  So to dispel any myths and spread the word about how chiropractic works with your body's innate ability to heal itself, here's

10. Chiropractors are REAL doctors!

Okay, this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but you'd be surprised at how many people think somehow that a chiropractor isn't actually a doctor, or that their training is less than that of an medical doctor (MD).  Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) receive almost identical training to their MD counterparts, the biggest difference being that MDs receive training in pharmaceuticals and surgery, and DCs receive more training in nutrition and specializations like pediatrics and neurology.  While in school, a DC will have 2887 educational hours on average, while a MD averages around 2756.  Plus, both DCs and MDs have to do a clinical residency, take board exams, and get a license from the state to practice medicine.

9. Your Chiropractor can order diagnostic blood work and imaging.

And they can do that because they're REAL doctors! (Sorry, we just had to.)  Most people probably expect their Chiropractor to order or perform an X-ray or even an MRI, but probably don't expect her to request blood or saliva testing!  In our practice, we use blood tests to establish your nutritional base line and test for the functionality of your stress response, hormones, and gut function.  We also use genetic testing to pinpoint what kinds of supplementation works best for each individual, since our genes are the building blocks of our body.

8. Size isn't everything!

It's not uncommon for us to hear "Well, I like to go to a male Chiropractor because he's big enough to work on a big dude like me".  Sorry, fellas, but female chiropractors are just as capable as their male counterparts.  Chiropractic is a matter of speed over strength, and small, quick, precise movement is what makes a good Chiropractor.

7. Adjustments don't hurt (and there's no "cracking" involved).

Let's say that again: Adjustments. Don't. Hurt.  You might be in pain if you're experiencing an acute or chronic injury, but your Chiropractor will tailor her pressure and treatment to cause you the least amount of discomfort possible.  In fact, you should feel even better after getting your adjustment!  Another misconception is that the sound you might hear when you get an adjustment - that "cracking" noise - is the sound of bones or joints being rubbed against each other.  NOT TRUE!  The sound an adjustment makes is called a cavitation, and is only space being created within the joint and then closed again quickly.  Think about when you were a kid and you created bubbles in the swimming pool by pulling your hand quickly through the water - a cavitation is the same concept.

6. Chiropractic care is safe and beneficial for children and infants.

Birth is possibly the most traumatic event you could experience in your lifetime, and when you have a birth that includes interventions like forceps or a c-section, then you have additional outside forces acting on your body from the very moment you are born.  When we get a bit older, as children we may fall thousands of times when learning to walk and play.  Those childhood bumps and bruises add up!  Taking your child to a chiropractor who is specially trained to work on infants and children - like Dr. Sarah, the Momma Chiro - is the best thing you can do to help them grow into functional adults.  We hear from many people that they're afraid to take their kids to the Chiropractor, because they think that the doctor will use the same amount of force to adjust a child as they do an adult.  The pressure, force, and technique used to adjust an infant or child is definitely not the same as that used on adults - another reason to take your child to a Chiropractor that is specifically trained to work with infants and children.

5. Chiropractic contributes to a healthy pregnancy for mom and baby.

Just like kids and infants, Chiropractic is 100% safe for pregnant women and their babies in utero.  Chiropractic adjustments balance the uterus and pelvis, which helps create more room in the uterus for the baby to turn and avoid a breech birth, and also removes the most common causes of pelvic and back pain in pregnant women.  Plus, it's been proven that women who receive regular chiropractic treatment during their pregnancy experience less discomfort and shorter labor times, so see your Chiropractor early and often!

4. Chiropractic boots your brain activity, increases your immune response, and removes inflammation.

Your brain activity increases anywhere from 20-50% immediately after receiving a Chiropractic adjustment!  A more active brain means more active control over your body's functions, which means your body is better able to control inflammation, regulate your hormones, and send and receive signals to through your system.

3. Chiropractic focuses on whole-body health.

Here's a quote from B.J. Palmer, one of the founders of Chiropractic as we know it today:

Chiropractic is the science, philosophy, and art that utilizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

Everything in your life has an effect on your health and well-being.  In our office, we look at everything that is going on in your world: physically, emotionally, and chemically.  We need to look at the whole being, to see what is affecting your health, in order to start to heal.

2.  It takes TIME for your body to heal itself.

There's two common reasons that Chiropractic doesn't work for some people: 1) Someone comes in a few times, starts feeling better, and leaves before finishing their treatment.  2) Someone comes in a few times, doesn't feel better, and leaves before finishing their treatment.  See the common thread?  In either instance, they haven't given their body enough time to reset to "normal" and start to heal itself.  Pain is the very last resort of your body to tell you that you've done something wrong, so once you're out of pain you still have 90% of the way to go before you're completely out of whatever abnormal pattern brought you here.  And the amount of time needed varies by the individual, whether it's a chronic or acute condition, and what changes are needed to correct the dysfunction.  Chiropractic will work if you let it!

And the number one thing you didn't know about Chiropractic is....

(drum roll, please)

1. Chiropractic is more than just back pain!

It's true, most people just think that Chiropractors fix your sore back.  But we haven't talked about back pain once in this entire list (or video, above).  We don't treat pain, we treat the whole person. And pain is just a symptom, not a cause.  Chiropractors work to treat the cause of your dysfunction, whatever it may be, and use the innate power of the nervous system to heal itself.

TMI Tuesday is moving to once a month!  We've started to see more of your smiling faces here in the office and we want to make sure we have enough time dedicated to seeing you, our patients.  Starting in October, tune in at 3pm on the second Tuesday of each month as Dr. Sarah answers your most embarrassing questions LIVE on our Facebook page!  Have a question for The Momma Chiro?  Email us at

TMI Tuesday: Does a bear poop in the woods? Can YOU?

Everyone may ask "Can a bear poop in the woods", but the real question is can YOU poop in the woods?  For this week's TMI Tuesday, special guest Ross from RC Training & Fitness shows us how to achieve the perfect functional squat.

All joking aside, a functional squat isn't only useful in a rustic camping situation or roadside emergency, it's also a good diagnostic tool.  A squat tests these three things:

  • Range of motion in your ankles, knees, and hips - can you move well enough to achieve a true squat?
  • Muscle strength - are you able to hold yourself in the squatting position?  Can you get down and back up? A true squat doesn't just work your legs, it'll work those coveted core muscles and every other muscle group in between.
  • Proprioception - does your body know how to move through space and adjust your balance at the same time?

The more you work on your functional squats, the stronger your body will become, and you'll be a more physically functional human bring overall!

Tell those extra LBs to GTFO!!!

Recovering from the holidays? Want to get rid of that holiday weight? Maybe you just want to kick start your New Years resolution? We have a great workshop for you!

The human body is an amazing thing. It has built-in systems that remove waste products and debris. Your lungs exhale CO2, your kidneys filter your blood, and your liver metabolizes drugs. All these systems work hard every day to keep you functioning. But they have limitations.

To function appropriately, your body requires the proper “oil” and “gas”. Your body is a lot like a car. No matter how well engineered that car is, if you don’t change the oil, stuff will break. A car, like your body, is designed to run with clean oil and enough gas. Too little oil, or oil that is too dirty is no bueno! You wouldn’t be surprised that your car wont start when its out of gas, so we shouldn’t be surprised that our bodies malfunction when we don’t supply it with the right “gas” and “oil”.

Water, Nutrients, Pre-and probiotics, these are the components of a well working human machine. Without these external components your body can’t excrete efficiently. Excrete? Yup, poop and pee... it’s important, you should be paying attention. Your morning visit to the porcelain god should be regular and a relatively uneventful routine.

Not going every day? This means that everything you eat is rolling around in your guts for a few days rotting... yes rotting. Dry, hard poopoo? Your colon removes water from the product of your digestion... too little water left means it’s hanging around for too long. Light tan colored doody? Eating a lot of fatty food lately? Tan color means that your gallbladder is working over time excreting bile salts to break down fat in the food you have eaten.

The modern American diet is full of ingredients that disrupt these cleansing mechanisms.

o Vegetable oils like soy and corn disrupt the balance of Omega acids in your body. Omega acids form the walls of cells and are critical to healthy brain function

o Refined sugar and simple carbs upset the balance of gut bacteria. Too much sugar and you can actually get yeast growing in your guts. The yeast attaches to your gut wall and makes it harder for you to adsorb some nutrients. There are a lot of good bacteria that actually function to improve adsorption of nutrients; you want to help those little guys.

oPesticides and petro-chemicals used on or in our food are toxic to you and your body. You know those gut bacteria we were just talking about? They can be killed by some of the added chemicals found in food. For real.

So is there like a gut reset button? Yup, getting a lot of good fiber, eating whole unprocessed foods, and removing the foods that promote bad bacteria. Not only will it reset your gut, but it also changes the way you body functions. Improving everything from thinking to digestion to excretion. Insoluble fiber helps your body move things along. It also absorbs fluid and kinda scrubs your guts. The whole, raw and minimally processed foods give you a complete source of nutrients, macro-nutrients, pre and pro-biotics.

Will this help me lose weigh? It sure isn’t going to hurt. I can’t tell you for sure that you are going to drop a bunch of weight, anyone that says that their program will get you to a size 2 from a 14 by summer is lying to you. What weight loss really depends on is you as an individual. What I will say is that the Standard Process Purification Program is a great way to get your self into some real healthful habits. Make the commitment to stop drinking pop, eating fried food and get your self into a new habit. You don’t have to give it up forever, start with 21 days. If you are anything like me, at the end of those 21 days, you wont want to eat junk food because it will taste strange. Your body will tell you that what you need is REAL nutrition, not empty calories and fake food. The great thing about this program is just how it resets your body. What healthful habits am I going to get into? At the very least, you will decrease your intake of simple carbs and processed food, and increase your consumption of insoluble fiber and whole foods. The Standard Process Purification Program a great step in the right direction. Say you drink pop now, after 21 days without pop the first sip isn’t a wonderful yummy experience, it’s a sickly sweet fake flavor bomb. Did you know that sugar acts on your brain the same way cocaine does? I’m absolutely serious. So what do you think  hat does to the way you eat? There is sugar in almost EVERY processed food. That adds up to a ton of empty calories, AND it causes you to crave more sugar. Even if something you taste doesn’t register consciously as sweet, your brain knows. It takes a hit and just wants more. Guess what, no pop on the Purification Program. You need to reboot that sugar cycle, making it easier to make healthier decisions every day.

Is there a program that you suggest Dr. Sarah? WHY YES!!! So glad you asked!! I love the Standard Process Purification Program. It can be a tough one at first but it is so worth the effort. And you know what, you are worth the effort. I know you can do 21 days. I did, and I felt great. Sure it was a change but you really can do it.

So what is the Standard Process Purification Program? How can I learn more? The Standard Process Purification Program is not strictly a cleanse diet but rather a structured program that combines eating whole food with supplements, nutritious supplement shakes, and light exercise. The menu includes an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits for the first 10 days with select proteins added on day 11.

OK, awesome, so what do I do now?

You can come to the workshop or get a private consultation. The workshop will be a group meeting where I explain the program and get some basic info. If you are not a current patient of mine I will need to see you in the office before the workshop.

We will be getting some base line blood tests and biometric info, so we can compare your  before and after.
